At Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University's Career Planning and Graduate Tracking Research and Application Center, with the contributions of the Anti-Disinformation Community, a comprehensive event was held to address disinformation, one of the most critical problems of the digital age. The program, titled "Disinformation in All Its Aspects," took place at the BAİBÜ Youth Office. Guest speaker Prof. Dr. Yavuz Akçi, a faculty member and head of the Public Relations and Advertising Department, met with participants and offered important insights on many aspects of disinformation, from its production processes to its dissemination methods.
The event was hosted by Lecturer Murat Er and the Anti-Disinformation Community. The program, which attracted significant student interest, emphasized the importance of accessing accurate information in digital media.
In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Yavuz Akçi, drawing on the principle that "Information is power; unverified information is a weapon," highlighted the effects of disinformation on individuals and society. Akçi, addressing the differences between traditional and digital communication, stated that the rapid spread of information in the digital environment brings with it serious risks.
In the presentation, the concept of disinformation was explained as "the deliberate production and dissemination of misleading information," and related concepts were also detailed. It was noted that erroneous information shared by mistake is called "misinformation," while the use of accurate information out of context to cause harm is called "malinformation." The importance of these distinctions for digital media literacy was emphasized.
Akçi also touched upon the mechanisms of disinformation dissemination, stating that algorithms, bot accounts, and viral content play a significant role in this process. Participants were advised to check sources, use fact-checking platforms, and critically examine content to verify its accuracy. The importance of a critical perspective was highlighted, particularly emphasizing the susceptibility of images and videos to manipulation.
The program also discussed the effects of disinformation through real-life examples. The global dimension of the issue was highlighted through examples of misinformation spread on social media during the 2023 election process in Turkey, anti-vaccine content that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, and propaganda used in international crises.
At the end of the event, it was stated that individuals acting as conscious media users is one of the most effective methods in combating disinformation. Participants gained awareness about accessing accurate information in the digital world, and the importance of critical thinking was emphasized once again.
